Tips for appearing in a video for your non-profit organization
Being asked to appear in a video for your non-profit organization is an honor. Here are some tips to make it a great experience.
- Wear a shirt or blouse with a collar so they have a place to clip the microphone.
- Turn your cell phone completely OFF before entering the interview.
- Clothing: Avoid small patterns or clothing with high contrast.
- Blue, medium blue or gray, pale pink and beige/tans work well.
- Do not wear clothing with tight patterns or pin stripes. This causes an optical illusion called a moiré pattern, which any camera struggles with.
- Avoid clothing with large patterns or geometric shapes or logos. The audience will watch your clothes instead of you.
- Avoid wearing all black, all white, or any red on television or video. Even the best of cameras have trouble with these colors.
- Avoid flashy jewelry. It reflects light and is distracting.
- Remove eyeglasses unless your audience won’t recognize you without them. If you must wear them, drop your chin a bit to avoid glare.
- Be conversational and try to relax.
Women:
- Do not wear vivid red lipstick or lip gloss. Stick to softer tones.
- Avoid dangly jewelry on neck and wrists. It makes noise that will be picked up by your microphone.
- Wear makeup. It has the practical purpose of reducing the glare of TV lights.
